Tree Ferns

The striking tree fern  Dicksonia antarctica .

Tree ferns are a common sight in the damp forests of southeastern Australia, where they impart a prehistoric feel. They grow readily outside their natural range, providing they are given a little extra care.

During dry weather, it’s important to ensure the trunks remain damp, as they are packed full of roots. Regularly douse the trunk with water or set up a drip irrigation system to guarantee success. In winter, freezing conditions can be especially damaging, so be prepared to protect these ferns during the worst winter weather. Pull the leaves upwards and tie them together, then stuff the crown (where the leaves join the stem) with straw or wood shavings. Wrap the trunk with a breathable material such as burlap, paying special attention to the top 12 inches, the most vulnerable part.
